Thanks for another timely, provocative and important piece. I never felt strongly enough to write about it, but I have always hated the terms "tribe" and "natives" when applied to African people for exactly the reasons you describe. I am Yoruba; one of about 40 million people who mainly inhabit Nigeria and the neighbouring Benin Republic. I always refer to African ethnic groups as "people" (e.g. the Yoruba people, the Ibo people etc.). I deliberately don't use the term "nation" because it has political connotations that imply a common united purpose, outlook and strategy. For various reasons, this is clearly absent among many of these groups.
